During the last decade, the two great powers of East Asia — China and Japan — underwent a major change in their respective grand strategy. China's new grand strategy has been variously documented as a "peaceful rise," or a "neo-Bismarckian strategy," or a "charm offensive." Japan is also re-emerging from a decade of stagnation and expanding its international role. Why have China and Japan, respectively, changed their grand strategies? What roles are they likely pursue in the international arena? These will be the central questions that the seminar will revolve around.
