The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Director's Seminar with Senator Jack Reed, (D-RI) in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
Jack Reed is Rhode Island’s senior U.S. Senator and a champion for middle-class families. Born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, his father, Joe, was a World War II veteran and Cranston school janitor who worked his way up to become custodial supervisor of the city's school system. His mother, Mary, was a homemaker who was unable to go to college herself, but made sure her three children studied hard and had the opportunity to pursue a higher education. The Reed family benefited from the GI Bill and Jack’s parents instilled in him the importance of serving your country and giving back to your community.
After graduating from West Point in 1971 near the top of his class and receiving an active duty commission in the Army, Reed earned a Master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. Reed served on active duty in the 82nd Airborne Division as an Infantry Platoon Leader, a Company Commander, and a Battalion Staff Officer before teaching at West Point as an Associate Professor within the Department of Social Sciences. Reed went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1982.
Reed served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before the people of Rhode Island elected him in 1997 to succeed U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell (D-RI) as Rhode Island 46th U.S. Senator. He strives to continue Pell’s legacy of ensuring that higher education is accessible and affordable for all students with the drive and determination to succeed.
Reed currently serves on three key committees in the U.S. Senate: Appropriations, where he chairs the Subcommittee on Interior & Environment; Armed Services, where he leads the Subcommittee on Seapower; and Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, where he helped write key parts of the landmark Wall Street reform law and successfully pushed for the creation of the powerful new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to help give American families the tools to fight unfair and abusive financial products and services.
Reed and his wife, Julia Hart Reed, have a daughter, Emily.
Today, Senator Reed continues to utilize the lessons he learned growing up in Cranston, which were deepened in the Army and tested in the halls of Congress, to stand up and speak out for the hard-working families who are the heart and soul of our country.
