The Current Political Situation in Rwanda
This is a Women Waging Peace (Waging) Pre-colloquium Event. Waging is a multi-year collaborative venture of the Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP) that connects women addressing conflicts worldwide. Waging breaks new ground by recognizing the essential role and contribution of women in preventing violent conflict, stopping war, and reconstructing ravaged societies. The third annual Waging colloquium will be held November 3-16, 2001 at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Approximately 40 women delegates from Cambodia, Guatemala, the Philippines, and Rwanda will join 20 returning delegates from other conflict areas in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States. In an effort to educate the Harvard community on the current political situation and recent historical events in these areas of conflict, WAPPP has planned a Waging Pre-Colloquium speaker series. Samantha Power is an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy and Executive Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. From 1993-1996, Power covered the wars in the former Yugoslavia as a reporter for US News and World Report and The Economist. She has just completed the book, A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, which examines US responses to genocide since the Holocaust. Her article on the Rwandan genocide, "Bystanders to Genocide," appeared September 2001 issue of The Atlantic Monthly.
