Fabrice Balanche, an Associate Professor and Research Director at the University of Lyon, is currently a Visiting Fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. In addition, he directs the Research Group on the Mediterranean and the Middle East (GREMMO) and has spent ten years in Lebanon and Syria engaging in fieldwork.  An expert in his field, he is frequently called upon to consult on Middle East development issues and the Syrian crisis.

His publications include Geopolitics of the Middle East (2014), Atlas of the Arab Near East (2012), and the book version of his thesis, The Alawite Region and Syrian Power (2006).

Balanche holds a Doctorate in Geography, as well as an MA in Geography from the University of Tours and a BA in Geography and History from the University of Besançon.
