Distributed Systems for Sustainability Research, Observation, Assessment and Decision Support: Reports from the Field

About

A distributed research, assessment and decision support system can be thought of as an integrated network of research, assessment, and management that bridges numerous levels, and includes sustained, long-term interactions between scientists, decision makers, and stakeholders. While traditional assessment processes still dominate the landscape of large-scale environmental problems, several recent efforts illustrate some of the characteristics of distributed information decision-support systems that effectively address the multi-level nature of these kinds of problems. This talk will report on discussions at the Open Meeting of the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change meeting in Rio of scientists and research managers who discussed the following systems: the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research/ Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maiz y Trigo in Mexico; the southern Africa drought monitoring system; and the Pacific ENSO Application Center.
