Do Jihadi Recantations Matter?

Since 2007, some analysts and media commentators have focused their attention on recantations issued by jihadi ideologues, with many observing that a revolt of jihadi leaders against jihadism is underway and holds the key to the collapse of jihadism. Of these ideologues, Dr Fadl's recent writings have been most publicized. This presentation examines Dr Fadl's so-called recantations in the context of his earlier writings and questions whether he has indeed recanted his jihadi views. This presentation argues that jihadism is not dependent on jihadi ideologues and leaders for its survival. While jihadi ideologues have framed the parameters of the doctrinal universe of jihadism, the reason their message has been successful is because they have advanced an accessible doctrinal program that undermines any form of hierarchy or authority, including their own, that may stand between the militant believer and jihad.
