The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host the Corliss Lamont Lecture with Andrei Kokoshin, Dean of Faculty of World Politics at Moscow State University, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
A graduate of Moscow’s famous Bauman Technical Institute with a degree in radioelectronics, Andrei Kokoshin is a former Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Russian State Duma member (1999-2011), Chairman of the State Duma Committee on the CIS Countries and Compatriots, and the first civilian to be named as a deputy minister of defense. Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s Andrei worked at the Academy of Sciences’ Institute of the United States and Canada, rising to the position of deputy director to Giorgy Arbatov and establishing a reputation as one of the leading Russian experts on Soviet-American political military affairs. Since 1999, Andrei has been a member of the Russian Security Council’s Scientific Council. Andrei is the founder and director of the Institute of International Security Problems, Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Dean of Faculty of World Politics at Moscow State University. Since 2011, Andrei has been Chairman of the Council of Scientific and Technological Policy for the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In the late 1980’s, Andrei collaborated on a series of articles that promoted a radical change in Soviet defense thinking, supporting international disengagement, domestic reform, and the technological-organizational requirements of the Revolution in Military Affairs. In 1991, Andrei opposed the August Coup, and with the creation of the Russian Ministry of Defense in April 1992, he was appointed first deputy minister of defense with responsibility for the defense industry and research and development, and relations with governmental agencies and State Duma. In May 1997, Russian President Boris Yeltsin named him head of the Defense Council and the State Military Inspectorate and, in March 1998, Yeltsin appointed him head of the Security Council.
Andrei Kokoshin has written over 20 books on national security, international affairs, Russian national industrial policy, and world politics. He received his doctorate in political science and is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and heads its Social Sciences Branch.
The Corliss Lamont Lecture series is made possible by the generous gift of Dr. Corliss Lamont (’24). The lectureship brings to Harvard a person widely recognized for leadership in diminishing the risk of nuclear war.
