Entrepreneurs of Insurgency: Combining Social Networks with Material Resources in Iraq

Open to the Public

This seminar will examine the causes behind the Iraqi membership in insurgency activities.

About

This seminar will examine the causes behind the Iraqi membership in insurgency activities. It will outline the key factors behind the emergence, development, and growth of the Iraqi component of the insurgency and will show how it has defied categorization by the existing theoretical accounts of insurgent movements. It proposes a new theoretical framework, illustrating the need to combine social networks with the allocation of material incentives, in order to provide an account of how Iraqi insurgency leaders have succeeded in mobilizing supporters for their cause. As the counter-insurgency drive is entering a critical phase, understanding the causes of membership in the Iraqi insurgent movements is an increasingly important task for scholars and policymakers alike.
