HIIP Seminar - "Naked Earth: The Evolution of Satellite Remote Sensing"
Over the last couple of years, the availability and management of spatial information has undergone a rapid transformation, not least of which is due to the technological progress and commercialization of satellite remote sensing. The current nadir of this trend towards more accurate, cheaper, and comprehensive images from space is the successful launch last September of IKONOS-1, the first commercial satellite with a 1m resolution. Isthis example of ?denationalizing? information access structures an inevitable step towards more transparency and efficiency in global information management, or are we losing yet another public good to the market at the cost of security and privacy concerns? The speakers will examine these questions and the resulting policy and regulatory implications against the backdrop of their model on information access and power shifts, developedin the context of the ?Virtual Diplomacy? research initiative.
