Professor Jalal is a specialist on South Asia, South Asian Nationalism, Pakistan, and Islam. Her most recent book is "Self and Sovereignty: Individual and Community in South Asian Islam Since c. 1850s" (2000). She has also taught at Columbia University and at Harvard University.
