Open to the Public

Public Presentation by:
Dr. Saad Eskander

Director-General of the Iraq National Library and Archives

About

Dr. Saad Eskander presentation will be divided into two parts:

Part I: A discussion of the social and political problems inherited from the Old Iraq, notably the weakness of liberal forces and their social foundation (i.e. the middle classes), the fragility of pan-Iraqism, the strength of radical Arabism and other ethnic, regional and religious identities.

Part II: A focus on the Iraq National Library and Archives (INLA) as an illustration, covering the following issues: the cultural and social functions of the INLA under the former dictatorial regime and the creation of a false identity and fake historical memory. The INLA's redefinition of its cultural role and social responsibilities, and the importance of recovering looted records for implementing justice in this transitional period.
