About
The Islam in the West Graduate Student Workshop (http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~mideast/activities/islaminwest/index.html) provides a forum for graduate students working on topics related to Islam and Muslim communities as minorities in the West as well as in Muslim majority context, with a particular focus on Muslim political participation and civic engagement. The workshops encourage graduate students and faculties from different departments to work together.
The primary focus of the 2014-2015 academic year will be to generate a discussion on Islam and democracy by comparing the new socio‐political developments in the Middle East and the reality of Muslim citizens in Europe and America. This comparison will examine the patterns of political participation of Muslims in minority and majority contexts.
This workshop serves as a student‐focused complement to an interdisciplinary research program, housed at the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Islamic Studies Program in collaboration with the Harvard Divinity School. Graduate students from all disciplines and schools (religion, sociology, anthropology, history, government) are welcome to attend.
Our first orientation session will take place on Tuesday September 9 from 6-8pm at the Center of Government and International Studies (CGIS South) in Room S050.
(Dinner will be served)
During this orientation session, the upcoming semester schedule will be discussed.
Workshop Sessions will take place once a month on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 pm and will be convened by Professor Jocelyne Cesari. Please RSVP if attending, by emailing salma_elmehdawi@mail.harvard.edu.
