Belfer Center Student and Fellow Discussion with Joseph Bryan

Joe Bryan is Principal at Muswell Orange, LLC, a boutique clean energy consulting firm.

Joe was appointed in 2014 by President Barack Obama to be Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy.  As DASN for Energy, he led the office responsible for Department of the Navy installation and operational energy programs.  Among Joe’s efforts were policies to support the execution of third party financed energy improvements and renewable energy capacity for Navy and Marine Corps installations; coordination of the Navy’s “Great Green Fleet” showcasing energy efficiency and the use of alternative energy in global operations; and collaboration with DLA Energy on the first bulk purchase of a renewable fuel blend for use in military operations.

Prior to his appointment, Joe spent nearly 15 years on Capitol Hill, including six years leading investigations for the Senate Armed Services Committee and on the professional staffs of the Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence and Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.  While in the Senate, he led a series of investigations, including inquiries of cyber intrusions into Department of Defense contractors, counterfeit electronic parts in the defense supply chain, and the abuse of detainees in U.S. custody.  Before moving to Washington DC, Joe lived in Cape Town, South Africa and worked on energy policy in Southern Africa.  He began his career working on electricity industry restructuring and state-level policies to expand markets for clean energy.
