Discussion with Jose Goldemberg, Professor Emeritus of the University of São Paulo, on Brazil's bioethanol program.
Professor Jose Goldemberg will discuss the development of the Brazil bioethanol program, begun as a response to the 1970s oil shocks. Today, ethanol from sugarcane has replaced 50% of the gasoline consumption in Brazil using 5 million hectares of land. It is a renewable resource and has reduced Brazil’s CO2 emissions by 15% every year. What is the outlook for the expansion of ethanol use in the world in the next 10 years and what are the potential social and environmental problems resulting from such expansion?
