New England International Donors (NEID) and the Boston University Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future will co-host a panel discussion on the current situation with the devastating floods in Pakistan and the ongoing impacts of Haiti’s earthquake earlier this year. The event will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2010, from 5:30-7:30pm, in Room 522 at the Boston University College of Arts and Sciences, 725 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston (see map here).

The event is being organized in collaboration with the Association of Pakistani Physicians of New England (APPNE), the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School, the United Nations Association of Greater Boston, WorldBoston and The Boston Foundation.
The event will include brief updates on the situation with the recent floods in Pakistan, followed by a moderated discussion (including audience questions) on the lessons that can be learnt from the philanthropic and humanitarian responses to these two recent crises. In particular it will focus on the need for viewing these disasters and the rebuilding efforts that follow as longer-range development investments. Panelists include:
- Dr. Nadeem Afridi of the Association of Pakistani Physicians of New England (APPNE), who was active in responding to both the Haitian earthquake and the Pakistan floods.
- Dr. Alix Cantave of the William Trotter Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and a leading scholar of Haitian studies.
- Faris Islam, a Pakistani undergraduate student at Tufts University who was in Pakistan when the floods hit and was active in the grassroots relief efforts.
- Prof. Adil Najam, director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and Boston University Professor of International Relations and Geography and Environment.
- James F. Smith, former Foreign Editor at The Boston Globe and currently Communications Director at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University’s Kennedy School.
