The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Director's Lunch with Julia E. Sweig, Senior Research Fellow at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
Julia E. Sweig is a leading national and international authority on the transformation of Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations, Brazil, Latin America, and American foreign policy.
Sweig is Senior Research Fellow at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. She is currently writing a biography on Lady Bird Johnson, to be published by Random House in 2017. The biography will be edited by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham, Executive Editor at Random House, and funded in part by the Ford Foundation.
Sweig is the award-winning author of several other books, including Cuba: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press) and Inside the Cuban Revolution: Fidel Castro and the Urban Underground, (Harvard University Press) for which she won the American Historical Association Herbert Feis Award for best book of the year by an independent scholar. Sweig has written numerous long form essays and policy reports on Cuba, U.S.-Cuban relations, Brazil's emergence as a global player, and Latin America.
She served as the Nelson and David Rockefeller Senior Fellow for Latin America Studies and Director for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) since 2005.
She is a frequent commentator across multiple media platforms and a columnist for Brazil's largest daily, Folha de São Paulo, writing about American politics, foreign policy and Latin America. The column is cross-posted in English on the Huffington Post.
She holds a BA from the University of California and an MA and PhD from the Johns Hopkins SAIS.
