The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Directors' Seminar with Ambassador Sardar Mohammad Roshan on Monday, February 9th in the Belfer Center Library (L369).

Ambassador Roshan served as a senior economist for the pre-communist government of Afghanistan. He has more than 30 years of experience in academics, international diplomacy, and private business development.

Ambassador Roshan has an in-depth knowledge of Afghanistan's social, political and economic issues, and is thoroughly familiar with the inter-relations of tribes and ethnicities in Afghanistan. During the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, he served as a guerrilla commander in one of the seven major Mujaheddin groups in Afghanistan from 1980 to 1989, when the Soviets withdrew.

He participated in conflict resolution efforts and has worked effectively with political, governmental and tribal leaders in Afghanistan. Ambassador Roshan is a diplomat who has worked closely with USAID, the United Nations, and other donor agencies. He served as Afghanistan's Minister of Education from 1989 to 1992 and Afghanistan's Ambassador to Pakistan from 1992 to 1994.

Currently, Ambassador Roshan serves as the Executive Director of the Afghanistan Technical Vocational Institute (ATVI), Afghanistan's first post-war, co-educational vocational college. ATVI was developed through a collaborative effort between private donors and the Afghan Government's Ministry of Education and is now the largest vocational education project funded by the USAID.
