The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is proud to host a Directors’ Seminar with Flynt Leverett, Senior Fellow and Director, Project on the Geopolitics and Geoeconomics of Energy Security at the New America Foundation, and former Senior Director for the Middle East at the National Security Council, on Tuesday, October 10th.
In addition to his position as Senior Fellow and Director at the New America Foundation, Mr. Leverett is also a visiting professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
From 1992 to 2003, Dr. Leverett had a distinguished career in government, serving as senior director for Middle East affairs at the National Security Council, Middle East expert on the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Staff, and senior analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency. He is widely recognized as a leading authority on the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, global energy issues, and U.S. foreign policy.
Dr. Leverett is the author of Inheriting Syria: Bashar’s Trial By Fire, a much acclaimed 2005 study of politics and policymaking in Syria that also offers recommendations for U.S. policy toward this critical country. He has published Op Eds and articles on Middle Eastern issues and global energy affairs in outstanding newspapers and journals, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Financial Times, The National Interest, and The Washington Quarterly. His most recent article, “Illusion and Reality in the Middle East”, is the cover feature in the September 2006 issue of The American Prospect.
Dr. Leverett has appeared on a wide range of news and public affairs programs, as well as The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. He speaks regularly in prominent academic and policy fora in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and before distinguished business audiences worldwide. In addition, Dr. Leverett serves as a consultant to the World Economic Forum’s “Gulf Cooperation Council and the World 2025” scenarios project. He holds a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University and is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
