Valerie Hudson is co-author of the recent controversial book, Bare Branches: The Security Implications of Asia’s Surplus Male Population, which argues that historically, high male-to-female ratios have often triggered domestic and international violence. With sex ratios in India and China being skewed to unprecedented levels through the use of sex-selective abortion, the surplus of males in Asia may have global security implications for the 21st century.
In their current research, Hudson and her co-author Andrea den Boer are examining how other factors relate to violence and security. The researchers are also currently developing a database of statistics from 197 nations, including 164 variables relating to the status of women.
