"So, You Want to Work for a Think Tank?" Belfer Center Director's Lunch with Dr. James McGann

Harvard Faculty, Fellows, Staff, and Students

From humble beginnings, think tanks have become a global phenomenon, with more than 7,500 organizations worldwide working to strengthen policy outcomes. What's it really like working for these "universities without students"? What kinds of roles are available to Harvard Kennedy School graduates? And how is this industry changing?

About

To answer these and related questions, the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs together with the Carr Center for Human Rights is pleased to host world-renowned think tank expert James McGann for a lunchtime talk and discussion moderated by Belfer Center Co-Director Eric Rosenbach.

Dr. McGann, a Senior Lecturer in International Studies at the Lauder Institute and Director of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the University of Pennsylvania, produces the annual Go To Think Tank Index, a ranking of more than 7,500 think tanks worldwide. He also organizes Think Tank summits in every region of the world, involving 1,000 think tanks each year.

McGann will discuss their role in public policy formation, industry trends, and opportunities for younger scholars and managers to leverages their skills and experiences to make an impact at these organizations. McGann has placed a priority on developing strategies to recruit the next generation of think tank scholars and executives, and has launched “New Faces and New Ideas: The Diversity and Innovation Connection” to address the issue.
