The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Director's Seminar with Lieutenant General (ret) P.K. “Ken” Keen, former Senior Defense Officer, U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
From July 2011 until his retirement in January 2013, LTG Keen served as Chief, Office of the Defense Representative-Pakistan for U.S. Central Command where he was responsible for all Defense Department elements in Pakistan. He was in this post in November 2001 when U.S. forces and Pakistani border troops exchanged fire resulting in the deaths of 28 Pakistani troops. Keen oversaw a staff of over 150 people, coordinating all U.S. military relations with Pakistan, including training, equipping, and humanitarian assistance.
An infantry officer with over 39 years of service, LTG Keen commanded at every level from platoon to Army (U.S. Army South). His combat tours include Operation JUST CAUSE as the assistant operations officer of the 75th Ranger Regiment and Operation DESERT STORM, where he commanded a Ranger Task Force in Joint Special Operations Command. He commanded the U.S. Military Group in Bogota, Colombia and Joint Task Force – Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.
LTG Ken Keen is a native of Hyden, Kentucky and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry following graduation in December 1974 as a distinguished military graduate from Eastern Kentucky University. His education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics; a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida; the Brazilian Command and General Staff College; and the U.S. Army War College.
He has numerous awards including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and Army Distinguished Service Medal.
