The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Director's Lunch with Ambassador Glyn Davies, Special Representative for North Korea Policy, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
Ambassador Davies’ remarks will focus on the current U.S. policy toward North Korea, in particular its proscribed nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. He will give a brief overview of the rationale behind our efforts to achieve denuclearization and will provide the audience a general idea of the medium and long-term goals for this policy. He will also brief the audience on our diplomatic engagements with our other Six Party partners.
Glyn Davies is the Special Representative of the Secretary of State for North Korea Policy. He was appointed in January of 2012, by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to facilitate high-level engagement with our other Six-Party Talks partners. Special Representative Davies serves as a senior emissary for U.S. engagement with North Korea. He oversees U.S. involvement in the Six-Party Talks process, as well as other aspects of security, political, economic, human rights, and humanitarian assistance policy regarding North Korea.
Ambassador Davies, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, served as the Permanent Representative of the United States to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Office in Vienna from June 2009 until November 2011. As the Permanent Representative he was charged with advancing U.S. interests in countering proliferation, terrorism, organized crime, and corruption, while promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Ambassador Davies previously served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, from August 2007 until his nomination as Permanent Representative by President Obama in June 2009.
His prior assignments include Acting Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; Deputy Assistant Secretary for European Affairs; Political Director for the U.S. Presidency of the G-8, with rank of ambassador; Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy London; Executive Secretary of the National Security Council Staff; State Department Deputy Spokesman and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs; and Director of the State Department Operations Center, the U.S. Government’s 24-hour Foreign Affairs Crisis Management Office.
Ambassador Davies served as Deputy Political Counselor at the American Embassy in Paris and in the European Bureau's Office of European Security and Political Affairs, working primarily on NATO nuclear and disarmament issues. He was a Special Assistant to Secretary of State George Shultz and served his first five years in the Foreign Service at the American Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia and the American Embassy in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Congo).
Ambassador Davies holds a Bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and a Master's degree from the National Defense University.
