Diplomacy – Anchoring the Alliance: Nicholas Burns
Professor Nicholas Burns, Faculty Director of the Future of Diplomacy Project, discusses an Atlantic Council project on transatlantic relations with Faculti media. The "Anchoring the Alliance" report can be found here.
In the interview with Professor Burns, he advocates stronger ties between the members of the NATO alliance. The Atlantic Council's "Anchoring the Alliance" report, says Professor Burns, argues that the major ambitions of NATO should be fivefold: the US needs to make a stronger and better effort in leading the NATO alliance; Germany needs to do the same and establish itself as the NATO leader in Europe; the UK needs to maintain its security apparatus as there have been major defense cuts in their budget in recent years; France needs to reinforce its commitment to NATO as it wields considerable influence as a military power; and lastly, there is a greater role in the alliance for Turkey as it is a "bridging country" and a "force multiplier" due to its influence in the Middle East.
