Anka Reuel is a Belfer Center Technology and Geopolitics Fellow and a Computer Science Ph.D. Student at Stanford University. She conducts research at the Stanford Trustworthy AI Research Lab and the Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory, advised by Prof. Mykel Kochenderfer and Prof. Sanmi Koyejo.

Anka's goal is to contribute to the responsible development, deployment, and use of AI systems with technical and governance solutions. Questions she's interested in include: How can we ensure the validity and quality of benchmarks and other evaluations? What technical tools and research can support AI governance efforts? And what could a consensus on a technical level look like in the context of international AI governance efforts?

Anka recently published a large collaborative paper, Open Problems in Technical AI Governance, which compares AI governance aspirations with the technical state of the art in AI and outlines 89 problem areas where more technical work is needed to enable and enact AI-related governance proposals and provisions. She's also the lead writer for the AI Chapter of the 2024 Stanford Emerging Technology Review and the lead researcher for the Responsible AI Chapter of Stanford's AI Index. Anka holds masters degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the London School of Economics.
