Janpal LaChapelle

Janpal is Graham Allison’s China research assistant, focusing on Chinese politics and US-China policy and strategy. He just returned from a 2-year Master’s at Peking University as a Yenching Scholar, where he studied local bureaucratic politics and pension provision in the context of public opinion with Zhang Changdong and Ma Xiao. While earning his BA at Stanford, he leveraged his Russian and Mandarin language skills as a researcher for Michael McFaul and lead research associate to Oriana Skylar Mastro, working for both on great power politics and security studies. His thesis, advised by Jean Oi, investigated logics and determinants of Chinese investment in Central Asia.
