Lieutenant Colonel Alan Burwell is a research fellow at the Belfer Center’s National Security Fellowship program. He holds MS degrees in Flight Test Engineering and Space Systems from Air University and the Naval Postgraduate School respectively, and BS degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University.

He is a space operator and commissioned officer in the United States Space Force and has commanded at the Detachment and Squadron levels, and is a graduate of the Air Force Test Pilot School. He also served as a member of the Department of Energy’s National Technical Laboratory fellowship program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory exploring topics of trust relationships in artificial intelligence and autonomous military systems. His current research explores various policy topics for the United States Space Force.
