Payam Ghalehdar is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the International Security Program at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center. His research examines the causes of U.S. regime promotions, particularly the variation between democracy promotion and prevention.

His prior research was an inquiry into the role of emotions, specifically emotional frustration, in U.S. decisions to engage in regime change operations. Prior to joining the Belfer Center, Payam was a Lecturer in International Relations (fixed-term) at the University of Cambridge and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Global Cooperation Research. He obtained his Ph.D. from the European University University and holds a B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of Mannheim.
