Vlad Barbalat
As Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Vlad Barbalat oversees Liberty Mutual Investment’s (LMI) mission to create capital by managing Liberty Mutual's globally invested financial assets.
Vlad began his career at Goldman Sachs in New York, where he spent 13 years and held several leadership positions across proprietary investing businesses and the broader Securities division franchise. He joined Goldman Sachs as an analyst in 2003 and was promoted to Managing Director in 2012. Vlad then went on to Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo (GMO) where he served as the Head Portfolio Manager for the firm’s flagship Global Macro hedge fund, and as a senior member of the Asset Allocation team.
Vlad joined Liberty Mutual in 2017 as Head of Investment Strategy and was later promoted to Co-Head of Strategy and Asset Allocation for LMI. In 2021 Vlad was appointed President and CIO. In this role, Vlad oversees the company’s investments business and serves as a member of the Liberty Mutual executive leadership team.
Vlad earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Information Systems, graduating summa cum laude from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business in 2003. He completed his CFA designation in 2006.
Outside his professional life, Vlad enjoys the outdoors, travel and surfing. He is fluent in Russian and has a passion for global history, culture and policy. Vlad and his wife Yana live in Newton Massachusetts with their three sons Michael, Sammy and Tal.
