Belfer Center Named Top Think Tank for Work in Climate Economics and Policy

| June 19, 2013

The International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) has named Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs winner of the 2012 ICCG Climate Think Tank Ranking in the Global category. The Belfer Center was cited as the most influential institution outside of Europe “working in the field of climate change economics and policy.” The European winner is the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) in Spain. See full report here.

The ICCG acknowledged the Belfer Center’s Environment and Natural Resources Program (ENRP) in its recognition of the high-impact policy work carried out by the Center in climate economics and environmental governance. The ICCG noted that the Center’s climate policy work is conducted by faculty and research fellows from several programs and projects: Environment and Natural Resources Program; Harvard Project on Climate Agreements; Energy Technology Innovation Policy research group; Geopolitics of Energy Project; and Agricultural Innovation in Africa project.

“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition by the International Center for Climate Governance,” said Henry Lee, director of the Environment and Natural Resources Program. “It is a reflection of the dedicated work of our faculty, fellows, and staff to improve the world's understanding of the policies required to mitigate the threat of global climate change--the defining environmental problem of this century.”

This was the first climate think tank ranking by the ICCG, a research center based in Italy that focuses on the design of climate policy and governance. The ICCG’s ranking assessments were based on a set of five indicators (events, authors of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, submissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, articles in peer-reviewed journals, and non-peer-reviewed publications). These indicators were weighted based on per capita productivity for each think tank based on the number of researchers.

Suerie Moon, a Harvard Kennedy School alum and former fellow who now heads a program within the School’s Sustainability Science Program, will accept the award on behalf of the Belfer Center. The award will be presented on June 27 during the 20th European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists Annual Conference in Toulouse, France. Each winning institution will receive a prize of 5,000 euros and a commemorative plaque.
