The Center''s Board of Directors is pleased to be joined by four new members: Professor Richard Darman, Professor Sheila Jasanoff, Professor John White, and Baroness Shirley Williams. The Board meets regularly to keep abreast of the research projects under way across the Center''s areas of expertise, and to maintain the sense of community among the Center''s leaders.
Richard Darman is Public Service Professor at the Kennedy School. He returned to the school in January 1998, having been a Lecturer in Public Policy and Management from 1977-80. In the intervening years he served as a member of President Bush''s cabinet and Director of the Office of Management and Budget; Deputy Secretary of the Treasury; and Assistant to the President of the United States. In the private sector he has been a managing director of Shearson, Lehman Brothers and a partner of the Carlyle Group.
Sheila Jasanoff joined the Belfer Center''s core faculty in July 1998. She is Professor of Science and Public Policy, with a joint appointment at the Kennedy School and the School of Public Health. Jasanoff has written extensively about science and technology in American politics. Her most recent book is Science at the Bar: Law, Science, and Technology in America. She is currently finishing a book on the comparative regulation of biotechnology in the U.S., Britain, and Germany and is principal investigator on the National Science Foundation-sponsored project, "Sustainable Knowledge about the Global Environment."
From 1995-1997, John White, was U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense. He returned to the Kennedy School faculty last year, where he was previously Director of the Center for Business and Government. White has held several other senior government positions including Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget. From 1981 to 1992 he was Chairman and CEO of Interactive Systems Corporation and then a Vice President of Kodak. He is currently a Senior Partner of Global Technology Partners, LLC, which specializes in private equity investments in technology, defense, and aerospace, and is a senior fellow at RAND.
Shirley Williams has been a Liberal Democrat member of the British House of Lords since 1993. She is on leave from the Kennedy School where she is Public Service Professor of Electoral Politics. She has taught courses on political leadership and on the European Union. She served in the British Cabinet (1974-79) as Secretary of State for Education and Science, Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection, and Paymaster General. She had previously served in the House of Commons as a Labour MP from 1964 to 1979 and as a Social Democrat MP from 1981-83. In 1981 she cofounded the Social Democratic Party and served as its president from 1982-88.
