The Belfer Center welcomes back one of the leading experts in the fields of
science, technology, and democratic politics. Sheila Jasanoff, the Center''s
latest core faculty addition, returns to the Kennedy School this fall after
founding the Department of Science and Technology Studies
at Cornell University.
Jasanoff was a visiting professor of science, policy, and law at the
Kennedy School and a Center resident in 1995, where she pursued her
research on expertise in government while teaching a course entitled "Law,
Science, and Public Policy." Jasanoff, who is author of several books and
numerous articles, returns to a warm welcome at BCSIA as a professor of science and
public policy. "Sheila has been a leader in advancing knowledge about how
science is used in the policy process," Graham Allison, BCSIA''s director, said.
Jasanoff''s primary interests are in the areas of science law, environmental
regulation and risk management, comparative public policy, and the use and
misuse of expertise in policymaking. BCSIA and Harvard''s School of Public Health and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences will share Jasanoff''s resources,
but BCSIA''s Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program will be home to her primary science research. "I am delighted to be returning to Harvard," Jasanoff said. According to KSG''s Dean Joseph Nye, Jasanoff will make "a wonderful fit" with the mission of the school. *
