Daniela Schwarzer Named Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship

Cambridge, Massachusetts – The Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center is pleased to announce that Dr. Daniela Schwarzer has been appointed a non-resident Senior Fellow.

Schwarzer is currently the Director of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP). She serves also as a Special Adviser on the international role of the European Union to Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission for a Stronger Europe in the World.

“Daniela Schwarzer is one of the most knowledgeable and accomplished experts in the transatlantic relationship,” said Faculty Chair Nicholas Burns. “We welcome her to Harvard and look forward to her active participation in our programs.”

Previously, Schwarzer was a member of the executive team of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), serving as its Senior Director of Research, as well as heading its Berlin office and Europe program. Prior to her work at GMF, Schwarzer spent eight years at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), where she led its research group on European integration from 2008 to 2013.

Dr. Schwarzer co-chaired the Harvard Kennedy School and German Council on Foreign Relations’ (DGAP) joint report entitled, “Stronger Together: A Strategy for Revitalizing Transatlantic Power,” published in December 2020. This year-long project convened a strategy group of experts and former government officials from the United States and Europe to propose a strategy to revive and strengthen the transatlantic relationship.

During her fellowship, Dr. Schwarzer will continue to participate in the Project on Europe’s research publications on transatlantic relations. She will also contribute her expertise in German and European foreign policy to the Harvard community by speaking in seminars and workshops and meeting with students.
