The heart of the Belfer Center is its research community of more than 150 scholars including Harvard faculty, an interdisciplinary group of resident and non-resident analysts and practitioners, more than 60 resident research fellows drawn from governments, academia, and the private sector, and a dozen Belfer International and Global Affairs student fellows selected from current Harvard Kennedy School students.
This year, the Center’s research fellow community includes pre- and post-doctoral fellows who are researching topics ranging from nuclear proliferation, cybersecurity, and diplomacy to climate change and energy policy. With backgrounds in government, academia, business, and the non-profit sector, they come from across the U.S. and from a range of countries such as Pakistan, Ukraine, Israel, Iran, China, and Australia.
Research fellows are selected by the Center’s major research programs and work collaboratively with other Center researchers, as well as on their own projects. During their year or two at the Center, they conduct research, write papers, and take part in Center seminars, workshops, presentations, classes, and working groups. The Belfer Center Fellowship Program is known for its selectivity and the high quality of its participants.
Several years ago, the Center established a Belfer International and Global Affairs (BIGA) Student Fellowship Program. This program selects a few BIGA student fellows each year from among a number of Harvard Kennedy School students who are in the Master in Public Policy degree program with a concentration in International and Global Affairs. The student fellows receive some financial support and have the opportunity to participate in policy research with specific Center programs or researchers.
