Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center’s Eric Rosenbach Named to Secretary of State’s International Security Advisory Board
Eric Rosenbach, Belfer Center Co-Director and former Pentagon Chief of Staff and Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Global Security, has been named to the Secretary of State’s International Security Advisory Board (ISAB), the U.S. State Department has announced.
ISAB, which has been reconstituted following a period of dormancy, provides the State Department with a continuing source of independent insight, advice, and innovation on all aspects of arms control, disarmament, nonproliferation, outer space, critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, the national security aspects of emerging technologies, international security, and related aspects of public diplomacy. The ISAB’s initial areas of study will include arms control, emerging technology, and new challenges posed by climate change and resource scarcity to international security.
At the Kennedy School, Rosenbach teaches courses focusing on policy development, strategy execution and national security policy. He is a thought-leader on international cyber policy and recently authored the cover article of Foreign Affairs and a book entitled Confronting Cyber Risk. Rosenbach's responsibilities within the Department of Defense included leading all aspects of the Department’s cyber activities and other key areas of defense policy, such as space, WMD, disaster response, and anti-terrorism.
ISAB is sponsored and overseen by Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie D. Jenkins and provides its recommendations to Secretary of State Antony Blinken through the Under Secretary. Board members reflect a balance of backgrounds, points-of-view, and demographic diversity and include a wide variety of scientific, technology, military, diplomatic, and political backgrounds.
Former members of ISAB include Ash Carter and Graham Allison. Among those on the current board with Rosenbach is Belfer Center Senior Fellow Shirley Ann Jackson.
