The Workshop on Ukraine-NATO Relations, sponsored by the Harvard University
Project on Ukrainian Security and the Stanford-Harvard Preventive Defense
Project, aimed at seizing the opportunity to integrate Ukraine more fully into Europe.
Bringing together senior officials and experts on April 7-8, 1998, in Washington D.C., the
workshop focused on formulating a set of concrete recommendations for
short- and long-term steps to fulfill the promise of this important
security relationship. The workshop highlighted the importance of Ukraine''s
role in Europe''s security future, and emphasized the critical role that the
United States and other Western allies can play in creating enduring ties
with Ukraine. The general consensus was that the next phase of work should
focus on making the Ukraine-NATO relationship as similar to membership in
NATO as possible.
