Africa is afflicted by HIV/AIDS, tropical diseases, drought, pestilence, and war. Each year Africa lags farther behind Asia and Latin America in economic growth. At the beginning of the independence era, Africa claimed a number of responsible leaders who sought better lives for their peoples, but now there are only a few African nations with long traditions of good governance and effective leadership. This article examines the reasons and remedies.
