This slim volume is a collection of eight essays that all have-to one degree or another-something to do with U.S.-Soviet relations. It is not the volume one would end up with had one set out to produce a systematic and comprehensive survey of detente; too much of importance to a thorough examination of detente is absent from these pages. This book is simply a group of papers loosely connected by the broad notion of detente. It is, nevertheless, a concise, readable, and generally useful study.
