Presented at the 8th Woodlands Conference, "Corporate Capabilities and Tools: Making Sustainability Work in the 21st Century." 28-30 January, The Woodlands, TX
Abstract
This Conference takes place at a time when growing numbers of corporations are developing sustainability policies and programs. Leading organizations and individuals are developing new standards, measures, and methods to support the implementation of these efforts. Yet, many companies seek additional guidance on overcoming particular organizational obstacles that hinder implementation. They have found that the development of new corporate competencies is critical to successful sustainability policies and programs. These competencies include leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, corporate change, and integration of stakeholders.
In his presentation, Kates discussed the need to develop the science of sustainability and focused on the opportunities for corporations to facilitate a transition toward sustainability.
