Belfer Center Fellow Syra Madad, Senior Director of the System-wide Special Pathogens Program at NYC Health + Hospitals and Belfer Center Fellow, has been named to the World Health Organization’s Technical Advisory Group on the Responsible Use of the Life Sciences and Dual-Use Research.
Dr. Madad joins an elite cohort of 19 other medical experts on WHO’s Technical Advisory Group. As announced through a WHO press release, she will serve as an advisor on a range of topics, reviewing and making recommendations to WHO regarding, “the scientific, technical and strategic aspects relevant to the monitoring and mitigation of biorisks and advances in the life sciences and related technologies, the governance of dual-use research and the responsible use of the life sciences.” She will identify gaps, challenges, strengths, and opportunities for the organization and will play a critical role in supporting Member States and stakeholders’ efforts to effectively develop and implement biorisk management.
