A Tax Credit for Volunteerism

Hurricane Katrina devastated our region in 2005. With the help of volunteers, we have been rebuilding. If oil prices rise high enough to make travel unaffordable for volunteers, our resurrection will falter. Fortunately, the US Congress has the capacity to help us by implementing a tax credit for volunteerism.

This problem is real - many organizations have already been wounded. Last week, the Meals-on-Wheels Association of America announced a 58% decrease in volunteerism due to rising gas prices. The Red Cross reports tightening budgets nationwide and many Salvation Army volunteers can no longer afford to drive to the offices.
