Visionary, professor, author, scientist, and champion of innovation Calestous Juma died on December 15, 2017 at age 64 following a lengthy illness. He continued his work, meeting with students and working on new book projects, until his final days. Following his death, tributes have poured in from students, world leaders, colleagues, and friends whose lives – and countries – he influenced.

Juma was Professor of the Practice of International Development at Harvard Kennedy School and Director of the Belfer Center’s Science, Technology, and Globalization Project. He also directed the Center's Agricultural Innovation Policy in Africa and Health Innovation Policy in Africa projects. Born in Kenya, Juma was a global renaissance man of science and technology: an elected member of the Royal Society of London, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences, the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and the African Academy of Sciences.

On this page, we have collected links to tributes and related media coverage, Juma’s research, and a photo gallery. We also invite you to submit your memories of this remarkable and beloved man using the comments form at the very bottom of this page.
