Africa and China: Politics of Everyday Engagement

Open to the Public

This research examines the phenomenon of China-in-Africa at the multiple layers of everyday engagement that exist below the formal construct of the state—and yet impact directly on the politics of engagement between Africa and China.  In particular, this project focuses on the interplay between two systems at the core of the contemporary relationship between Africa and China:  flows of commodities and consumer goods and flows of people and images.

Africa and China: Politics of Everyday Engagement

About

This research examines the phenomenon of China-in-Africa at the multiple layers of everyday engagement that exist below the formal construct of the state—and yet impact directly on the politics of engagement between Africa and China.  In particular, this project focuses on the interplay between two systems at the core of the contemporary relationship between Africa and China:  flows of commodities and consumer goods and flows of people and images.  Because of its macroeconomic focus, current analysis has ignored the social and cultural factors that affect these ties.  This ethnographic research highlights overlooked narratives and images as ordinary people comment on and contribute to the phenomenon of China-in-Africa and provides new analysis of social patterns of globalization.
