The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Directors’ Seminar with Sir Michael Howard, President Emeritus of the International Institute of Strategic Studies and former Chichele Professor of the History of War at Oxford University, and Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History at Yale University on Wednesday, October 17th, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).

Sir Michael Howard was born in London in 1922 and served with the British Army in Italy during the Second World War, during his service; Sir Michael was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in action. He has held Chairs in History and the History of War at the University of London, Stanford University, and Yale University.  A prolific writer and war historian, Sir Michael is best known for expanding military history beyond the traditional campaigns and battle accounts; moreover, his work has included the discussion of the significance of war, the development of national security and defense strategies and academic military theory.

Sir Michael’s first major work, The Franco-Prussian War was awarded the Duff Cooper Prize and the second, the United Kingdom Military Series: Grand Strategy, volume IV in the series of the Official British History of the Second World War, received the first Wolfson Award for History. His book The Invention of Peace received the Political Book Prize from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin. He was co-editor and translator with Professor Peter Paret of Clausewitz on War, for which he received the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for Military History.

Sir Michael has received the Chesney Gold Medal from the Royal United Services Institute in London, the NATO Atlantic Award, and the Paul Nitze Award from the US Center for Naval Analysis. A Founder of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, he holds the appointment of President Emeritus. Foreign Affairs published his article on "What's In A Name?: How to Fight Terrorism," which addressed the issue of declaring "war" on terrorism. Most recently he published a collection of essays, Liberation or Catastrophe.

Professor Howard has been honored by the Queen with a knighthood and membership of the Order of Merit, the highest British civil award, comparable to the Congressional Medal of Honor.
