About the series: The Diversity in STEM series developed and moderated by Dr. Syra Madad highlights leaders in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The aim of the series is to recognize the diversity in STEM and highlight various accomplishments and contributions by leaders in STEM fields while educating and empowering the youth, providing valuable advice, and sharing pearls of wisdom.

 Join Belfer Fellow Dr. Syra Madad, Billy Almon, Dr. Ryan McGarry, and Dr. David Eagleman in conversation.

About the Speakers

Billy Almon

Billy Almon is an Astrobiofuturist, exploring biology-inspired solutions to improve the human condition for those of us on earth and those who will travel to the stars. He speaks to multiple generations of inventors, designers, scientists, and engineers on designing the future they wish to see. Previously, Billy was a creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, leading efforts to develop immersive experiences and environments around the world.  


He is an inventor and holds a master's degree in Biomimicry from Arizona State University and bachelor's degree in Architecture from Howard University.  Billy sits on the Board of Directors for the Biomimicry Institute, the world’s leading authority on nature’s solutions to design challenges. He also teaches biomimetic design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. 

Ryan McGarry

Ryan McGarry, M.D. is an award-winning director, producer and screenwriter of film and television. His first feature film, ​CODE BLACK ​inspired the CBS Television drama series of the same name, for which McGarry served as executive producer and writer for three seasons. He is co-creator and executive producer of the Emmy Nominated Netflix documentary series ​PANDEMIC​. He continues to practice and teach Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC / LAC+USC Medical Center. 

 

David Eagleman

David Eagleman is a neuroscientist, New York Times bestselling author, TED speaker, and Guggenheim Fellow.  He is the writer and presenter of the Emmy-nominated series The Brain on PBS, as well as The Creative Brain on Netflix.  In Palo Alto, California, he teaches at Stanford University, runs a startup neurotech company called Neosensory, and directs the Center for Science and Law.  He is the author of eight books, including the international bestsellers Sum and Incognito, and his newest book, Livewired.  Dr. Eagleman also runs a film & television production company, Cognito Entertainment, to bring scientific themes (fiction and non-fiction) to the screen.
