The Republic of Georgia and its new president, Mikhail Saakashvili, face the challenge of restoring federal control to all Georgian territory. Currently, Ajara is a de facto autonomous region. What are the implications of Ajarian policies and actions ? and of Tbilisi?s confrontation with the region ? for the Georgian state and the entire South Caucasus?
