How to Make Friends: Chinese Partnership and Alliance Strategy in Southeast Asia

Open to the Public

China has been one of the pioneers of using limited alignments in its diplomacy particularly towards Southeast Asia. However, most of the prevailing literature tends to focus on evaluating bilateral relations rather than assessing why and how Beijing deploys its partnership strategy. This seminar presentation aims to fill this gap by exploring the dynamics of Chinese strategic partnerships in Southeast Asia.

How to Make Friends: Chinese Partnership and Alliance Strategy in Southeast Asia

About

China has been one of the pioneers of using limited alignments in its diplomacy particularly towards Southeast Asia. However, most of the prevailing literature tends to focus on evaluating bilateral relations rather than assessing why and how Beijing deploys its partnership strategy.

This seminar presentation aims to fill this gap by exploring the dynamics of Chinese strategic partnerships in Southeast Asia. The precise trajectory of Chinese strategic partnerships is determined not merely by material interests as is traditionally argued, but also the symbolism of image maintenance at the regional level and, to a lesser and varying degree, the domestic political context in China. Along with explaining how "strategic partnerships" reveal a shift in Chinese foreign relations towards bilateralism, the seminar investigates the variation of those partnerships with an eye on China's regional alliance aspirations.
