This masterpiece by John Sayles is based on the struggle between coal miners and anti-union forces that led to a massacre and set off the West Virginia Mine Wars in 1920. Starring Chris Cooper, Mary McDonnell and James Earl Jones (1987). James R. Green is Professor of History and Labor Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Boston and a Lecturer at the Harvard Trade Union Program. He is the author of ?Grass-Roots Socialism,? ?The World of the Worker,? and ?Commonwealth of Toil.? As a labor educator and activist, he has worked closely with many labor unions including the United Mine Workers of America. He was associate producer of ?Out of Darkness: The Mine Workers? Story,? a film produced for the union by Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple.
