HUMAN RIGHTS UNDER SEIGE IN COLOMBIA
An unprecedented peace movement has been growing in Colombia, a country upheld as Latin America?s oldest democracy, but plagued by the longest running civil conflict in the hemisphere. Violence in the civil war has increased dramatically over the past two months as leftist guerillas, right-wing paramilitaries and Colombia?s security forces battle for supremacy. Today?s speakers will discuss their personal stories of advancing human rights amidst increasing violence and the increasing attacks against the human rights community in Colombia. They will also speak to fragile preliminary peace negotiations in the country and what the international community, especially the U.S. government and U.S. citizens, can support peace and respect for human rights in Colombia during this critical time.
