The Labor Market for Rebel Recruitment in the Syrian Civil War

Open to the Public

This seminar examines the main stages of the development of Islamist groups though the prism of the labor market: how groups start and attract prospective fighters (recruitment), their personnel management policies (retention), and when fighters leave and groups disband (turnover)—relying on the primary field data that the speaker collected on the frontlines of the Syrian civil war.

Please join us! Coffee and tea provided. Everyone is welcome, but admittance will be on a first come–first served basis.

The Labor Market for Rebel Recruitment in the Syrian Civil War

About

Until now little is known about rebel labor economics—how rebel groups (and Islamist groups in particular) recruit their members, their personnel management policies, and the reasons why fighters abandon the cause and groups disband.

Relying on the primary field data that the speaker collected on the frontlines of the Syrian civil war, she examines the main stages of the development of Islamist groups though the prism of the labor market: how groups start and attract prospective fighters (recruitment), their personnel management policies (retention), and when fighters leave and groups disband (turnover). (For the study, interviews were conducted with members of Islamic front/Ahrar Al Sham, Al Qaeda–affiliated Al Nusra brigade, and ISIS foreign fighters.)
