Fred Heiding is a research fellow with the Defense, Emerging Technology, and Strategy Program.
Biography
Dr. Fred Heiding is a research fellow at the Belfer Center’s Defense, Emerging Technology, and Strategy (DETS) Program at Harvard Kennedy School and a computer science research fellow at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). He researches AI-enhanced cyberattacks at the intersection of technology, business implications, and policies. Dr. Heiding works with the World Economic Forum's Cybercrime Center to improve global and domestic cybersecurity standards of AI-based cyber defense. He is a teaching fellow for the Generative AI for Business Leaders course at the Harvard Business School and leads the cybersecurity division of the Harvard AI Safety Student Team (HAISST). His research demonstrates how AI models can be used to hack devices and users and create mitigation strategies for preventing those hacks, some of which he presented at Black Hat 2023, in his latest article, and at the misinformation village during DEF CON 2023. In early 2022, Dr. Heiding got media attention for hacking the King of Sweden and the Swedish European Commissioner. He has assisted in the discovery of more than 45 critical computer vulnerabilities (CVEs).
